Cletis A. Bailey was born November 30, 1925 in Bradley County, Tennessee. Shortly after graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Army on August 4, 1944.

In January 1945 he was shipped to Europe as a replacement. On February 2nd , he was assigned to Co K, 333rd Regiment, 84th Infantry Division. He joined them when the 333rd regiment came out of the Battle of the Bulge.

The 84th division lost many soldiers, and Cletis served as a replacement. On February 23, 1945 Cletis was part of Operation Grenade, the crossing of the Roer River. His unit crossed the footbridge during heavy mortar and small arms fire. Within ten days, the 84th Division reached Homberg on the Rhine River. From there, Cletis and his unit fought their way to the Elbe River, where they met the Russian Army on May 2, 1945.

Cletis was discharged on June 26th, 1946. Upon returning from WWII, Cletis remained in the Army under Active Reserves for nearly 3 years while attending National School of Business. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and served in Vietnam.
