Ronald “Rondo” Scharfe was born on September 14, 1927 in Chicago, IL.

He enlisted in the US Navy on November 2, 1944 at 17 years old and attended boot camp at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. After completion, he was sent to school in March, 1945 to Advanced Training Base Camp Bradford in northern Virginia.

Rondo was assigned to the USS Vanderburgh on June 27, 1945 and participated in the occupation of Sasebo and Kure, Japan in October. He continued on this ship until the end of his tour in March of 1946 and was transferred to the USS Romulus.

Rondo was honorably discharged on July 9, 1946 in Great Lakes, Illinois.
